నేటి సమాజం లో దానం యొక్క ప్రాముఖ్యత 

నదులు తమ జలాలను తాము తాగవు. చెట్లు తమ ఫలాలను తాము తినవు. తమ మూలంగా  మొలకెత్తిన ధాన్యపుగింజల్ని మేఘాలు తినవు. సంపన్నుల ధనం ఇతరుల ప్రయోజనం కోసమే. దానం చేయడం మంచిదని అంగీకరించినా, అనేక ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానాలు తెలుసుకోవాలి.  

దానం ఎప్పుడు ఇవ్వాలి? దీనికి మహాభారతంలోని ఒక సంఘటన సమాధానం ఇస్తుంది. ధర్మరాజు తన వద్దకు దానం కోసం వచ్చిన ఒక బిచ్చగాడితో మర్నాడు రమ్మని అంటాడు. వెంటనే అక్కడే ఉన్న భీముడు తన అన్న మృత్యువును గెలిచారని సంతోషంతో గట్టిగా అరుస్తాడు. 'రేపు దానం ఇవ్వడానికి తాను జీవించి ఉంటాడని  మా అన్నకు తెలుసు' అని భీముడి ధీమా. అప్పుడు ధర్మరాజుకు ఆకాశవాణి నుండి ఒక సందేశం వినిపిస్తుంది. రేపు దానం చేయడానికి తాను ఉంటాడో ఉండదో దాతకు తెలియదు. కాబట్టి అనుకున్న క్షణంలో దానం చేస్తే మంచిది. 

 మరో ప్రశ్న. ఎంత ఇవ్వాలి? చరిత్రలో ఒక ప్రసిద్ధ సంఘటన దీనికి సమాధానం చెబుతుంది. మహా రాణా ప్రతాప్ సింగ్ అనబడే రాజు మొఘల్ చక్రవర్తితో జరిగిన యుద్దంలో తన రాజ్యాన్ని, సైన్యాన్ని మరియు సంపదను కొల్పోయి అడవుల్లో జీవిస్థున్తదు. అటువంటి చీకటి క్షణాల్లో పూర్వం అతడి వద్ద పని చేసిన నమ్మదగిన భామాషా అనే మంత్రి తన రాజుకు తెలియకుండా మొఘల్  సంస్థానం యొక్క ఖజానాపై లూటి చేసిన ధనంతో  పాటు  తాను సంపాదించుకున్న  మొత్తం సంపదను తన రాజైన  రాణా ప్రతాప్ కు కానుకగా ఇస్తాడు. రాణా ప్రతాప్ తిరిగి సైన్యాన్ని సమకూర్చుకొని మొఘల్ చక్రవర్తిపై యుద్ధం చేసి విజయం సాదిస్తాడు.  దీనర్థం 'నీవు ఎంత ఇవ్వగలవొ అంత ఇవ్వు'  అని. 

ఇంకొక ప్రశ్న! ఏమి ఇవ్వాలి?  ధనమే కాదు, ఒక పువ్వు ఇవ్వవచ్చు. ఒక చిరునవ్వు ఇవ్వవచ్చు. ఒక పరిచయం లేని వ్యక్తికి చిరునవ్వు అందిస్తే అతడికి గత అనేక వారాల్లో జరగని మేలు జరగవచ్చు. ఏదైనా మనసుతో సద్భావంతో ఇవ్వాలి. ఎవరికీ ఇవ్వాలి? - ఇది చిక్కు ప్రశ్న. సాధారణంగా చాలామంది దానం అడగడానికి వచ్చిన వ్యక్తిలో లోపాలున్నాయని, తప్పులు చేసాడని వంక పెట్టి దానం ఇవ్వరు. అతడు దానానికి అర్హుడు కాదని భావించి త్రోసిపుచ్చడం సబబు కాదు.న్యాయన్యాయములు బేరీజు వేయకుండా దానం ఇవ్వాలి.  ఎలా ఇవ్వాలి? ఇది అటువంటి ప్రశ్నే. దానం స్వీకరించే వ్యక్తి అవమానం పాలు కాకుండా, దానం చేసే వ్యక్తిలో ఏదో ఇస్తున్నానన్న గర్వం వ్యక్తం కాకుండా ఇవ్వాలి. కుడి చేయి చేసే దానం ఎడమ చేతికి తెలియకుండా ఇవ్వాలి. ప్రచారం అట్టహాసం లేకుండా చేసేదే అత్యుత్తమ దానం.

Annadhanam (Poor Feeding)

Annadanam Samam Danam Trilokeshu Na Vidhathe

These are the verses from the Vedas, meaning Annadanam is supreme and incomparable to any charity. Food is the basic requirement for all humans. Thus according to Vedas, the one who does annadanam to devotees, attains heaven (Punya Loka) in this Universe (Brahmanda) itself. In this whole universe, the creation and its progression depends on food. Hence giving food to the devotees is more than attaining heaven.

"Gaja turaga Sahasram Gokulam koti danam
Kanaka Rajatha patram Methini sagarantham
Upaya kula vishuttam Koti kanya pradanam
Nahi nahi bahu danam Annadanam samanam" 

Meaning:Donating 1000 elephants & horses, donating 10 million cows, donating any number of vessels of silver and gold, donating the entire land till sea, offering the entire services of the clan, helping in the marriage of 10 million women, all this is never ever equal to Annadanam, the feeding of hungry and needy.


Adi Sankaracharya in his stotram praising Annapurna, the personification of plentiful food, says:

"Annapurne sadapurne Sankara Pranavallabhe 
gyanavairagya siddhyartham bhiksham dehi ca Parvati" 

Meaning:Annapurna Devi, Goddess of Plenty, you are Lord Shiva’s eternal Consort, give us alms together with wisdom.’

Some of the Dhaanam’s practiced and followed by are as follows:

JALA DAANAM:  This form of charity involves giving water with betel nut and dakshina to a Brahmin, and it is done for wealth.

SHAYANA DAANAM: Giving bed to a needy is done for general happiness.

VASTHRA DAANAM:  Giving clothes to needy will ensure a long life to the giver.

KUMKUM DAANAM: When a woman donates kumkum, she ensures a long life for her husband.

CHANDANA DAANAM: Donating sandalwood will prevent accidents

NAARIKELA DAANAM: Donating coconuts will ensure that the last seven generations attain salvation

BUTTERMILK DAANAM: Donating buttermilk will give you knowledge and enlightenment.

PADARAKSHA: Don- ating slippers to the need will keep the giver away from hell.

CHATRA DAANAM:  Donating umbrellas on the other hand will help remove obstacles from the giver’s path

BLOOD DONATION is noble act, but it should be done without any reward


VIDYA DONATION to an ignorant is noble provided it is done without any reward
